Russia, weakened by the conflict with Ukraine, is losing its position on the international stage. The recent cancellation of the Russian-Arab summit in Moscow has become a symbol of the waning of its influence in the Middle East.
Failed Summit
According to The Guardian, the summit, which was supposed to strengthen Russia’s position in the region, did not take place. Only a few politicians, including the President of Syria and the head of the Arab League, confirmed their participation. The rest ignored the invitation. Meanwhile, world leaders gathered in Egypt to discuss the situation in Gaza, where Russia was not present at all.
The Guardian’s headline summarized the situation: “Putin’s shameful cancellation of the Arab summit signals a weakening of influence in the Middle East.” The Kremlin chose not to comment on this event.
Decline of Influence
Loss of Key Positions
Experts note that Moscow no longer plays a significant role in the region’s diplomacy. Berlin analyst Hanna Notte stated that the main players in the Middle East no longer pay attention to Moscow. The influence inherited from the USSR is gradually disappearing. The Syrian regime is weakening, and Russia cannot provide support, losing allies to the USA and China.
Isolation and Consequences
The Kremlin’s attempts to maintain influence by flirting with Hamas and Iranian structures only exacerbated the rift with Israel. Prime Minister Netanyahu now focuses on cooperation with the West. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov admitted that Russia will not impose itself in conflict resolution, which effectively means capitulation.
Global Changes
Loss of Positions
The loss of influence in the Middle East is only part of the overall picture. Russia has already lost Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, and influence in the Caucasus, as well as in Africa, where China, the USA, and Turkey are more active. The war against Ukraine has destroyed the myth of a “great power,” turning Moscow into a toxic player with which no country wants to associate.
The cancellation of the summit was not just a technical step but a political verdict: the era of Russian influence in the Middle East has ended.
