In his blog, Ruslan Bortnik shares his opinion on the ceasefire in Gaza, achieved with the mediation of Donald Trump. The expert believes that this is a temporary solution that will last at most until the Congressional elections in 2026. According to him, this demonstrates that Trump thinks within the framework of his presidential term.
Ukraine and World Powers
Bortnik notes that the situation in Ukraine is different. Here, there is almost a direct confrontation between great powers. Ukraine has the unfortunate experience of the Minsk agreements, which attempted to freeze the conflict to achieve a political solution. However, such an approach, according to the expert, is not applicable in the current conditions.
Trump, as Bortnik claims, does not have sufficient leverage over all parties to the conflict. The influence of the USA on Ukraine is even lower than on Israel, despite its military and political power. Ukraine has strong allies within the USA and in Europe, which makes its position more stable.
Prospects for Freezing the Conflict
Bortnik believes that the model of freezing the conflict is possible only if one of the parties feels the threat of military defeat. Only then can compromises be reached that will lead to the freezing of the war. Until that moment, in his opinion, such solutions are unlikely.
