Archaeologists have discovered the ruins of a 2,800-year-old palace where Jacob likely fought with God “from dusk to dawn.” Stone blocks depicting lions and lavish feasts were found at the site of Tall al-Dahab in Transjordan, which possibly corresponds to the biblical Mahanaim of the Israelites.

Professor Israel Finkelstein says the ruins reveal more clearly the significance of biblical events in the region. The place Mahanaim, mentioned in the Old Testament, is important in the biblical stories. A Herodian building, possibly part of Amathus, has been discovered nearby, indicating the importance of the site in the Roman era.

Jacob of Penuel Hill, according to the stories, had to face an angel and name the place after seeing “the face of God.” The rectangular residence supposedly belonged to Jeroboam II, the 13th king of Israel. Archaeologists found blocks with images of feasts and military motifs, as well as lion heads at the entrance.

Researchers suggest that the residence on the site of the biblical Mahanaim was an Iron Age temple complex. Although the authenticity of the biblical stories has not been proven, discoveries show the presence of the Israelites in the region for thousands of years.
