The Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, expressed the government’s readiness to support the training of future Palestinian leaders and police officers, as well as to assist in the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, Bloomberg reported on October 22, 2025.
Prospects for Peace
Speaking before the Italian Senate, Meloni noted that after many years of conflict, there is a real opportunity for a just peace in the Middle East. This statement was made on the eve of the European Council meeting in Brussels.
The ceasefire declared at the beginning of the month was called “fragile” by her, emphasizing the need for international efforts to maintain it. Determination and patience are the key words she used to describe the approach to this task.
Diplomatic Efforts
In early November, Meloni plans to meet with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in Rome. The meeting will discuss the restoration of Palestinian territories.
Internal dissatisfaction with the support for Israel attributed to Meloni has led to strikes across the country. This prompted her to promise to recognize the Palestinian state in cooperation with other European countries.
The Role of Italy
Italy is actively involved in diplomatic efforts to achieve a ceasefire. Meloni expressed gratitude to U.S. President Donald Trump and mediators from Egypt and Qatar for their contribution to ending the hostilities, which claimed the lives of more than 70,000 Palestinians.
Italy is already training Palestinian police officers in Jericho and participating in the mission at the Rafah border crossing. Humanitarian aid, evacuation of those in need of medical care, and educational programs are all part of Italian support.
