More than two dozen people have been detained in Iran following the assassination of Palestinian Hamas political leader Ismail Ghaniya in Tehran. Among them are high-ranking intelligence officers, military officials and employees of the military hotel complex where the explosion occurred, according to Iranian sources familiar with the investigation.
The special intelligence unit of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has taken over the investigation and is tracking down suspects possibly linked to the assassination plotters. The arrests of numerous people highlight the serious security threat to Iran's leadership following Ghaniya's death, which occurred in a highly secure facility just hours after the new president was inaugurated.
Analysts say Iran's failure to defend its country and allies could be fatal to the Iranian regime. It sends a message to Iran's enemies that the Islamic Republic of Iran can be overthrown.
Hamas politburo chief Ismail Ghaniya was killed in Iran by an explosive device that went off months after it was planted, Western media reported, citing an unnamed source. Iran and Hamas blamed Israel for the incident, but Tel Aviv neither confirmed nor denied its involvement.
