On November 10, 2025, in Tel Aviv, at the House of Zionists of America (Beit Tzionut America), Meiragoff Hall, a lecture-discussion by the famous Israeli journalist and documentarian Itai Anghel titled “The War of Ukraine and Putin’s Russia” will take place. The event starts at 20:00, and the language of the event is Hebrew.
The event is timed to the third anniversary of the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and is organized with the support of the public organization Israeli Friends of Ukraine, which unites Israelis of Ukrainian origin, volunteers, and journalists.
Recommendations from Israeli Friends of Ukraine
The organization presented an official invitation on their social networks, emphasizing that this is not just a lecture, but a live meeting with a war witness.
“We invite you to a unique lecture-discussion…
… The war, which took hundreds of thousands of lives and forced millions to flee their homes, began by the decision of one person. But this is not only Ukraine’s war. This war is changing the entire world order and poses a threat of an even greater catastrophe…“, says the recommendation from Israeli Friends of Ukraine.
The organizers note that Anghel was in Ukraine in the early days of the invasion, filming on the front lines and personally meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky. His reports became one of the first honest testimonies of the events for the Israeli audience.

Who is Itai Anghel
Itai Anghel is a senior correspondent for the Israeli TV channel Channel 12 (Keshet), author of numerous reports and documentaries for the program Uvda (“Fact”). He is a laureate of the Sokolov Award, a two-time winner of the international Rory Peck Award (London), and a recognized expert on reporting from conflict zones.
Over three decades of work, Anghel has filmed wars and revolutions in Rwanda, Chechnya, Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq, Gaza, and Ukraine. His reports have always been distinguished by a special approach — to show not politics, but the people caught in the center of the catastrophe.
In February 2022, when Russia attacked Ukraine, he arrived in Kyiv literally a few days after the invasion began. There he witnessed the first attacks on suburban towns, spoke with Ukrainian military and civilians, documented destruction and fear. During one of his trips, Anghel met with Volodymyr Zelensky — this interview went down in history as the first major address of the Ukrainian president to the Israeli audience.
Zelensky, in conversation with Anghel, spoke about the hope for moral support from Israel, his Jewish heritage, and that “in the 21st century, there can be no justification for a war started by one person.”
“The Battle for Kyiv” and “Last Stop Before Kyiv”: two names of one truth
Footage shot by Anghel in Ukraine formed the basis of his documentary “The Battle for Kyiv” (הקרב על קייב, The Battle for Kyiv), which aired on the Israeli Channel 12 in the spring of 2022.
The film, released as part of the 28th season of the “Uvda” program, followed fighters and citizens in the Ukrainian cities of Kyiv, Horenka, and Irpin during the start of Russia’s war with Ukraine. Anghel and Gerald documented Russian military operations and strikes on civilian homes.
This work received the Israeli Documentary Forum Award and was nominated for the International Emmy Award.

When the film was adapted for an international audience, it was given the title “Last Stop Before Kyiv”.
The change in title is not related to the content but to the context: the Israeli version focused on the Kyiv stage of the invasion and personal stories, while the international version focused on the symbolism of Ukraine’s resistance and human destinies on the edge of life and death.
“The Battle for Kyiv” became a chronicle of the first weeks of the war, while “Last Stop Before Kyiv” is a metaphor for the choice the whole world faced: to stop evil or pass by,” note film critics.
Why this is important for Israel
Anghel is one of the few Israeli journalists who was not afraid to call things by their names. He reported on Russian strikes on civilian infrastructure, filmed destroyed synagogues, and spoke with Jewish-Ukrainians who remained in the country despite the danger.
In Israeli society, his films evoked a strong response. After the broadcast of “The Battle for Kyiv,” many viewers wrote that they saw the war not as a “news story,” but as personal pain and a moral choice.
What to expect from the lecture on November 10
According to the organizers, the lecture in Tel Aviv will be accompanied by exclusive video footage and testimonies from the front that have not yet been shown on television. Anghel will talk about what Ukraine looked like in the early days of the war, his meeting with Zelensky, and what conclusions the world should draw in the face of a new geopolitical reality.
