On December 26, 2024, Lebanon announced its intention to improve relations with Syria.
Lebanese Foreign Minister Abdullah Bou Habib conveyed this message to his Syrian counterpart Asaad Hassan al-Shibani in a telephone conversation. Lebanese Hezbollah, backed by Iran, helped Syrian President Bashar al-Assad during the long war and brought its fighters back to Lebanon to fight Israel, weakening the Syrian government's position.
Under Assad, Hezbollah used Syria as a transit corridor for weapons from Iran, but anti-Assad fighters seized the border with Iraq and cut off that route, and then Islamist rebels captured the capital Damascus.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed support for a close dialogue with the leader of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group, Ahmed al-Sharaa. Erdogan stressed that Türkiye insists on protecting the territorial integrity and unity of Syria in all circumstances.
