In Amsterdam, after a football match between the Israeli club Maccabi Tel Aviv and the Dutch Ajax, Israeli fans were attacked by people wearing masks with Palestinian flags and chanting pro-Palestinian slogans. They also tried to break into hotels where Israelis were staying. According to various sources, from 10 to 30 Israeli fans were injured. According to the Israeli newspaper Yediot Ahronot, before the game, fans of the Israeli club took down the Palestinian flag hanging on the street. After the match, the Israelis were attacked in several places in the city. The victims have bruises and stab wounds.
The Israeli Foreign Ministry said 10 people were wounded, but two Israelis could not be contacted. The severity of the wounds received is being determined. Dutch police officials said they had received a number of reports of fights in the city center. According to police, 57 people were detained after the riots.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the immediate dispatch of two planes to the Netherlands to return Israeli citizens to the country. The head of the Israeli government demanded that the Dutch authorities take “swift and decisive action” against the rioters to ensure the safety of Israeli citizens. The Israeli Foreign Ministry urged Israelis in Amsterdam not to leave the hotel.
Israeli Ambassador to the UN Denny Danon posted footage of the attack on social media and called the incident a “pogrom.”
“These are the real supporters of the radical terrorism we fight,” he wrote.
The leader of the largest right-wing Freedom Party in the Dutch parliament, Geert Wilders, called the event on the streets of Amsterdam a pogrom.
“We have become the Gaza of Europe. Muslims with Palestinian flags hunt Jews. The authorities will be held accountable for their failure to protect Israeli citizens,” he said.
