A “meeting” between the special representative of the Russian president and deputy minister of foreign affairs Mikhail Bogdanov and the Israeli ambassador to Russia Simona Galperin took place in Moscow. The Russian side “explained its position on the Middle East settlement, supporting the decisions of the UN and the Security Council.”
The meeting discussed “the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and other current issues.” The parties expressed their readiness to “maintain an active political dialogue.”
“The parties” also discussed several other pressing issues. “The commitment to maintaining an active Russian-Israeli political dialogue on international and regional issues of mutual interest was confirmed,” the publication says.
However, it was not announced what issue exactly the Israeli ambassador addressed to Russian representatives.
The Israeli ambassador also paid tribute to the victims of the Beslan terrorist attack, expressing condolences and calling for the release of the Israeli hostages. She stressed that “terrorism has no borders” and continued the fight for the release of those imprisoned by terrorists.
Mikhail Bogdanov, a representative of the Russian leadership on Middle East issues, is known for his close ties to Palestinian movements, including Hamas. Russia has repeatedly advocated for the inclusion of Hamas in international negotiations, which has caused a mixed reaction in the world. Despite formally recognizing the need for a peaceful settlement, Russia maintains close ties with groups that are considered terrorist organizations in Israel and the West.
This fact, along with Russia's support for UN and Security Council decisions on the Middle East settlement, speaks of dual standards in Russian foreign policy. On the one hand, Russia declares its readiness to maintain a political dialogue with Israel, while on the other, it actively interacts with organizations that wage armed struggle against Israel.
