The Israeli military announced on Thursday October 17, 2024 that it was investigating the assassination of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar in the Gaza Strip. The military did not release further details, but four Israeli officials said the slain militant's body had been sent to an Israeli laboratory for DNA comparison with Sinwar's.
The militant was killed Wednesday during a shootout with Israeli soldiers in southern Gaza, three officials said. The DNA samples will be compared with those collected from Sinwar during his incarceration in Israeli prisons.
US officials said Israel allegedly tipped them off about the possible killing of Sinwar by soldiers. All spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the issue, while Hamas has not yet commented on the situation.
Israeli officials believe the body could be Sinwar's due to physical similarities and intelligence indicating he was in southern Gaza. However, they urge caution as DNA testing has not yet been carried out and are surprised that such a senior Hamas leader could end up in a firefight on the surface.
The death of Sinwar, one of the masterminds of the Hamas attack last October, could revive hopes for an end to the conflict. His death could force Hamas to agree to some Israeli demands or give Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a symbolic victory.
