This evening, the Israeli government voted to declare a state of emergency in the home front throughout the country. The decision gives the IDF and the Home Front Command expanded powers to manage the situation among the civilian population. According to the 1997 Civil Defense Law, the authorities will act not only during attacks, but also during periods of calm.
The special situation includes strict measures, such as a ban on public gatherings and restrictions on educational activities. The goal is to ensure security and public order. The implementation of the measures is subject to the recommendations of the IDF and the Home Front Command. The Knesset Foreign Affairs and Security Committee must consider the introduction of the special situation. If there is no discussion within five days, the declaration will be null and void.
The Defense Minister can declare a state of emergency in the Home Front for 48 hours without government approval. If the decision is confirmed, the Home Front Command will be given the authority to control the movement and gatherings of citizens. So far, the IDF has not announced any changes for residents south of Haifa, but the situation may require additional security measures.
