Iliya Kusa believes that excluding Turkey from NATO would be inappropriate, as it would only push Ankara towards Russia and China. This opinion was expressed by the Middle East expert of the Ukrainian Institute of the Future in an interview for LIGA.net. He emphasized that Turkey remains a key partner of NATO, given its strategic location and influence on regional processes.
The expert noted that Turkey plays an important role, providing access to the Black Sea and controlling the Bosphorus and Dardanelles straits. In addition, it is a “gateway” to the Middle East and Africa. According to Kus, the exclusion of Turkey from NATO could lead to strengthening its ties with Russia and China, which is not beneficial for the Alliance.
The expert noted that Turkey is interested in maintaining its membership in NATO, given its stable relations with the European Union and the United States. At the same time, Ankara has the opportunity to develop relations with other countries, such as Russia, China and India, in accordance with its own interests.
On July 28, Turkish President Erdogan announced the possibility of “joining” Israel, as happened earlier in Libya and Nagorno-Karabakh. In response to this statement, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz called on world leaders to exclude Turkey from NATO.
