A ceasefire in the Gaza Strip that could be negotiated between Israel and Hamas as early as this week would help prevent possible Iranian retaliation for the killing of terrorist leader Ismail Haniyeh, senior Iranian officials have confirmed to Reuters.
A senior Iranian security official said Iran and its allies, including Hezbollah, were prepared to attack Israel if peace talks in Gaza failed or dragged on. The sources did not specify how much time Iran would allow for progress in the talks before a possible attack.
Iran is also reported to be sending a representative to the Gaza ceasefire talks. While he will not be present at the meetings, he will join the behind-the-scenes discussions to maintain diplomatic contacts with the US.
Insiders close to Hezbollah say Iran is willing to give talks a chance, but will not give up the opportunity to take action against Israel. They say a possible ceasefire in Gaza would give Iran a pretext for a less significant and symbolic response.
