Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, convened an emergency meeting of the Supreme National Security Council at his residence. According to two Iranian officials with knowledge of the meeting, it was called in response to an Israeli strike in Beirut that targeted Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.
This information emerged after Israel carried out a powerful attack on Hezbollah headquarters in the southern suburbs of Beirut. Israeli and American sources claim that Nasrallah was the target of the attack. Israeli journalist Ben Caspit reported that Nasrallah may have been killed in the strike, although Arab media said he was safe. There is no official confirmation of this information yet.
Israeli officials said the decision to kill Nasrallah was discussed before Prime Minister Netanyahu's trip to New York. It was decided to wait for an opportune moment, which was found on Friday. The attack on Beirut came shortly after Netanyahu spoke at the UN General Assembly, where he noted the need to defeat Hezbollah to ensure Israel's survival.
Lebanon's health ministry said the strikes killed at least two people and injured 76. Lebanese Health Minister Firas Abiad warned that the death toll could rise as many people are still trapped under the rubble.
