The Biden administration has been working through diplomatic channels in recent days, engaging its allies in the Middle East to persuade Tehran to reconsider its decision to attack Israel militarily.

They warned Iran that a massive strike would only increase tensions and could lead to a direct confrontation between the two countries, two senior U.S. officials said. The administration also urged Iran to reconsider its response to the blast that killed the Hamas leader.

U.S. officials have sent messages to Tehran through various intermediaries that if the blast that killed Haniyeh was the result of a covert Israeli operation and did not result in the deaths of Iranian citizens, Iran should reconsider its plans to launch military action against Israel.

Officials have indicated they are waiting for Iran to respond to Haniyeh's killing, but it appears Tehran has changed its mind and “the United States does not foresee an imminent attack on Israel.” Asked whether Iran has changed its mind, National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said he would not comment on intelligence assessments, but the Biden administration does not want escalation.

“If that happens, my God, we will be ready to defend Israel and ourselves if necessary,” he added.
