German intelligence agencies are investigating about 700 people suspected of spying for the Iranian government. They are associated with the Berlin Islamic University “Mustafa Institute”. According to BILD, the investigation is related to the activities of the Quds Force of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which uses the Berlin branch of the university to recruit spies and support terrorist organizations such as Hamas and Hezbollah.
According to US Treasury documents, Mustafa International University, which has branches around the world, is used for military recruitment and intelligence gathering. Investigators divided all the suspects into three groups: 63 people with German passports, 551 Mustafa University students with connections to Germany, and 78 interns from Germany. The action takes place on October 21, 2024.
The CDU/CSU political bloc demanded a ban on the activities of the Islamist university, since it considers it a threat emanating from Iran. This was stated by CDU representative Alexander Dobrindt. Expert on the work of intelligence services Christoph de Vries emphasizes that the German authorities must explain why they did not close the Mustafa Institute earlier, given its presence on the sanctions lists of the United States and Canada.
Cases of espionage for Iran have also been discovered in Germany. The intelligence services associate this with the activities of Russians in the Bundeswehr, which also does not exclude the possibility of espionage in favor of the Russian Federation. The action takes place on October 14, 2024. It is necessary to take measures to limit the activities of the Iranian university in Germany and to stop similar threats in the future.
