The Israeli Ambassador to Ukraine visited Kiev's Boryspil Airport for the first time in a long time at the invitation of its director, Alexey Dubrevsky. He notedthat despite the fact that planes have not flown to Ukraine for two and a half years, the airport is maintained in perfect order, and some improvements have been made.
The diplomat also stressed that Ukraine is studying Israel's experience in the field of civil aviation and the operation of airports even during rocket attacks. The ambassador expressed confidence that flights to Tel Aviv and other cities will soon resume from Boryspil.
The airport's management said the visit was a symbol of support and solidarity between Ukraine and Israel.
Since the start of the full-scale invasion in February 2022, Ukraine has faced massive destruction of infrastructure and the suspension of most flights. Let's take a closer look at how flights were cancelled, which airports were damaged, and what plans exist to restore air traffic.
Flight cancellations and affected airports
Flight cancellations: Immediately after the invasion began, Russia began to strike Ukrainian infrastructure, including airports. As a result, most international and domestic flights were cancelled from early February 2022. This was due to both the direct attacks and the general deterioration of security.
Affected airports:
- Kyiv Boryspil Airport: The airport was temporarily closed, although it was not directly affected by the attacks. It became a symbol of the closure of Ukrainian airspace.
- Kharkiv airport: One of the first to suffer from shelling, the airport suffered significant damage, making it unusable.
- Dneprovsky airport: It was also under threat, although the specific damage was less noticeable.
- Vinnitsa airport: Damaged by Russian missile strikes in July 2022. Although the airport itself was not the primary target of the attack, its infrastructure was damaged.
Plans for the restoration of air traffic
Restoring air traffic in Ukraine has become one of the most important tasks after the cessation of active hostilities in a number of regions. Some key areas include:
- Repair and restoration of infrastructure: Work is underway to restore the destroyed airports, including the reconstruction of runways, terminals and navigation systems.
- Safety: To ensure safe flights, it is necessary to strengthen security measures both on the ground and in the air. This includes protection against possible missile attacks and ensuring airspace security.
- International flights: Ukraine is working to restore international air traffic. In this context, an important step would be the return of flights to Boryspil, which is currently maintaining order and preparing to resume flights.
Restoring air traffic is critical for Ukraine not only from an economic perspective, but also to support social stability and restore normal life. It will help strengthen international ties, restore tourism, and support economic development.
However, the full restoration of air traffic requires a comprehensive approach: from ending military actions to modernizing infrastructure and ensuring security. In this context, international assistance and the experience of other countries, such as Israel, which has experience in operating airports under threat, can play an important role in restoring normal air traffic in Ukraine.
