A Hamas delegation arrived in Cairo on Saturday, August 24, to listen to mediators on a new round of ceasefire talks in the Gaza Strip, which took place in the Egyptian capital, Reuters reports.
“Hamas has confirmed its commitment to what it approved on July 2, based on US President Joe Biden's proposal and its readiness to implement it,” said senior Hamas official Izzat al-Rishk.
In July, Hamas accepted a US offer to begin negotiations on the release of Israeli hostages after the first stage of a potential agreement to end the war in Gaza.
According to another senior Hamas official, Mahmoud Mardawi, who is linked to Hamas media, the delegation's trip to Cairo does not mean that the group will take part in the next round of talks.
On Thursday, August 22, Israeli representatives met with US mediators in Cairo, who presented a “compromise proposal” to resolve disputes, including the issue of Israel's presence in strategic areas of the Gaza Strip.
However, there was no sign of a breakthrough on key contentious issues, including the emphasis on maintaining control of the Philadelphi Corridor on the Gaza-Egypt border.
Hamas accuses Israel of violating previous agreements in the talks, which Israel denies. The group also claims that the United States is not acting as a reliable mediator.
Ceasefire talks have been ongoing for months but have yet to produce a breakthrough in ending the war in Gaza or freeing the hostages.
White House National Security Spokesman John Kirby says early signals indicate the Cairo discussions were productive, but additional talks are planned. Things are moving forward, Kirby says, dismissing reports that talks and a ceasefire agreement could break down.
