Hamas released a video of Israeli soldier Idan Alexander, who has been in captivity for more than 420 days. Idano reported his lengthy imprisonment after last having contact with his mother on October 7 during a Hamas attack. Idan, a US citizen, joined the Golani Brigade as a lone soldier.
After losing contact with their son, the family received several auditory confirmations of his life. The freed hostages said that they saw Idan and that he supported other hostages, helping them cope with difficulties. Yael Alexander, Idan’s mother, noted that even in captivity, her son remained persistent and morally supported those around him.
The family expressed their disappointment in the actions of the Israeli government and accused it of inaction. In an op-ed for the New York Times, they called on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to make the release of the hostages a national priority. The video of Idan became a reminder of the plight of the Israeli hostages and intensified demands for their rescue.
