Trump's former national security adviser John Bolton expressed doubt that Gaza ceasefire talks will be completed soon, following Biden's statement that a ceasefire agreement in the region was close.

“The real question is what happens after the hostage exchange, and here, I think, Hamas and Israel are very far apart. For Hamas, a ceasefire means a complete ceasefire and the withdrawal of all Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip, which effectively means the end of the war. For Israel, a ceasefire means a certain period of time — four, six, eight weeks — after which the fighting can resume,” Bolton told NewsNation on August 16, 2024.

Bolton’s statement follows two days of talks in Doha, Qatar, between mediators from the United States, Israel, Qatar, Egypt and Hamas. The United States hopes to conclude the talks next week, with Secretary of State Antony Blinken due to arrive in Israel on August 18 for intensive talks. “What was announced by the United States, Egypt and Qatar is an interim proposal, which does not mean that the Israelis or Hamas have agreed to it,” Bolton said.

Recall that Biden first presented a three-stage plan for establishing peace in the region in late May. His proposal, including the return of hostages and a final end to hostilities in the region, was approved by the UN Security Council.
