Half of Americans are concerned about the possibility of confrontation in the Middle East, according to a survey released Oct. 30. An AP-NORC Center for Public Research poll found that 51% of voters are “very” concerned about the conflict escalating further. Another 36% said they were “somewhat concerned” and 11% said they didn't care. The poll was conducted before Israel struck Iran last week.

Roughly 85% of voters said they were at least “somewhat concerned” about the possibility of the United States getting involved in a war in the Middle East. Approximately 14% disagree with this.

About half of Americans surveyed (49%) believe that the United States is doing everything possible to mediate between Hamas, Israel and Hezbollah. About 3 in 10 voters think the United States can do more.

The AP-NORC Community Research Center study was conducted Oct. 11-14 among 1,072 adults. The sampling error for registered voters was 4.2 percentage points.
