Guatemalan authorities conducted a special operation in the complex of the radical Jewish sect Lev Tahor, saving 160 children and 40 women from violence within the group. Interior Minister Francisco Jimenez stressed that the protection of children and girls is their top priority. The investigation began after the discovery of the bones of one of the boys. November complaints of forced pregnancies, abuse and rape by cult members prompted swift intervention by authorities.
Officials tried to check the farm where the sect is based, but they were not allowed in. The Lev Tahor group accused the authorities of religious persecution. The sect has faced legal problems in various countries, including Israel. In 2022, a cult leader was arrested in Mexico near the border with Guatemala.
In 2021, two of the group's leaders were convicted in New York of kidnapping and sexually exploiting children. They kidnapped two children from their mother to force the 14-year-old girl back into illicit sexual relations. Lev Tahor is a closed, little-known group with international followers who adhere to a strict interpretation of Jewish law in Canada, the United States, Mexico, Guatemala and Israel.
