The war in Ukraine stimulates the transition to green energy. The transition to renewable energy has become a priority in the fight against global warming, especially since the signing of the Paris climate agreement in 2015.
Last year, for the first time, the European Union obtained more energy from renewable sources than from burning gas, saving about 10 billion euros in gas purchases, according to a report by think tank Ember. Solar and wind power accounted for about 22% of electricity produced, a record figure, while gas accounted for about 20%.
With Russian gas abandoned following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Europe is focused on rapidly cutting demand. The region is also phasing out coal, partly for the same reason: on August 1, 2022, the EU imposed an embargo on coal imports from Russia, which accounted for 45% of EU coal consumption.
These factors, according to Ember analysts, should contribute to the rapid development of green energy in Europe.
That year, Germany received the most renewable energy in the EU: 126 TWh from wind and 59 TWh from solar. Overall, the share of wind energy in Germany is around 20%.
During her recent visit to Ukraine, German Foreign Minister Annalena Bärbock, a representative of the Green Party, discussed the development of renewable energy in Ukraine, especially wind generation. She considers it advisable to build a wind power plant around the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.
The Ministry of Environment Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine, the German international company Notus Energy, Ukrenergo and the State Agency for Management of the Exclusion Zone signed a memorandum of cooperation in working on a project to build such a power plant.
“Such use of the Exclusion Zone will bring investment and new jobs. And this is a contribution to Ukraine’s energy independence, the development of green technologies and income for the state,” stated the Ministry of Environment of Ukraine.
The agency clarified that the wind farm in the Chernobyl exclusion zone will be able to provide electricity to about a thousand households.
By the way, Germany at the end of 2022 made the largest contribution to the Energy Support Fund of Ukraine – 130 million euros.
According to Annalena Burbock, green electricity from Chernobyl is “the future version of the world.” It implies that after the war and victory, the restoration of Ukraine should turn the country into a technologically advanced state.
The development of renewable energy fully fits into the European integration processes that await Ukraine and is consistent with the Paris climate agreement. Even after signing the Association with the EU, Ukraine committed itself to “greening” the domestic energy sector.
At the end of July 2021, the Ukrainian government approved Ukraine's Updated National Contribution to the Paris Agreement, under which the country aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 35% of 1990 levels by 2030. However, it is obvious that this plan will have to be updated taking into account the new realities caused by a full-scale war.
In addition to practical benefits, the wind power plant will also have a positive impact on the image of the Chernobyl zone, ceasing to be associated exclusively with the man-made disaster of 1986, experts say.
Interestingly, since 2018, a solar power plant has already been operating in Chernobyl – “Solar Chernobyl-1”, which is located directly next to the 4th power unit of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. During the construction process, 3,762 solar modules were installed, and the annual productivity of the station is 1,024 MWh/year.
