KYIV, Ukraine — Early Sunday morning, Russia launched a powerful strike on Ukraine using drones and missiles. At least four people were killed, and the country’s capital, Kyiv, was seriously affected by the attacks.

This was the first large-scale bombardment since the recent airstrike that claimed the lives of at least 21 people last month.

Timur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv city administration, reported the dead and injured via Telegram. Among the victims was a 12-year-old child.

Attack Strategy

“The children’s death toll counter has started again,” Tkachenko wrote on Telegram.

Thick black smoke rose over the city center after the explosion.

The attacks began on Sunday night and continued after dawn, affecting both residential buildings and civilian infrastructure. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko noted damage in more than 20 locations across the city.

Situation in the Metro and at the Station

At Kyiv’s central station, passengers endured anti-aircraft fire and the sounds of drones. Mostly women quietly waited for the air raid to end, while parents checked news on their phones and children played online games.

“The sky darkened again,” reported one passenger, who identified herself only as Erika. “This is happening too often.”

Consequences of the Attacks

A multi-story residential building, heavily damaged by the strike, had significantly damaged upper floors, and windows were blown out. Rescuers, including firefighters with an extendable ladder, used chainsaws to clear the debris. Shards of glass piled up on the sidewalks, where residents, appearing anxious, stood on benches.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha described the scale of the attack as “hundreds of drones and missiles.”

“The cost of further escalation for Russia must be increased,” Sybiha noted on social network X.

Russian officials have not made official comments regarding the attacks.

International Responses

In response to threats from the east, Poland has already lost its calm: fighter jets were deployed in the morning hours when Russia struck western Ukraine.

Polish military described these measures as “preventive.” Recently, international concerns have increased that the conflict could extend beyond Ukraine. Incidents have included Russian drones landing on Polish territory and Russian aircraft intruding into Estonian airspace.

New Weapons for Ukraine

The latest bombings coincided with a recent announcement by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky about a “mega-deal” for arms purchases from the United States. The package, worth $90 billion, includes both a main arms sale agreement and a separate agreement for the purchase of Ukrainian drones, which the US will acquire directly.
