Dictator Putin is escalating his anti-Semitic rhetoric, posing a threat to the Jewish community in Russia.
During a speech on Direct Line, Putin accused Jews of destabilizing the Moscow Church in Ukraine, calling them “absolutely faithless, atheists, many of whom are Jews.” This caused concern to the former chief rabbi of Moscow, now president of the Conference of European Rabbis, Pinchas Goldschmidt. He warned of a possible return to Stalinist levels of anti-Semitism in Moscow.
Goldschmidt noted that Putin’s similar rhetoric has already led to dire consequences in Russian history, reminiscent of Stalin’s repressions against the Jewish population. He also stressed that anti-Semitism under Putin's regime has increased since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which could lead to negative consequences.
The rabbi called on the world community to sharply condemn Putin’s “dangerous propaganda.”
It is also worth noting that the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) has begun to support Russia’s aggressive actions against Ukraine, which is causing growing discontent in society. The influence of the Russian Orthodox Church in Ukraine began to wane after the Orthodox Church of Ukraine received autocephaly from the Patriarchate of Constantinople, which led to the emergence of an independent church in Ukraine. This does not suit the Kremlin, which accuses Ukraine of “split” and “persecution.”
Putin continues to support anti-Semitic rhetoric, which causes concern in the international community. His statements about Zelensky and the destruction of a Jewish cemetery in the Sumy region after Lavrov’s anti-Semitic statements caused widespread resonance and condemnation.
