After the rain: the return of Ukraine's stolen children

Thousands of Ukrainian families suffered a terrible ordeal: their children were illegally taken to Russia and separated from their parents. The International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant for Putin, accusing him of deporting more than 20,000 Ukrainian children. The documentary After the Rain shows how families recover from this tragedy through therapy with animals and fight to get their children back.

The history of the Mezhev family: a voice on the world stage

The Mezhev family from Mariupol became a symbol of this tragedy. The father, Evgeny Mezhevoy, survived torture in a Russian prison while they tried to place his three children – Svyatoslav, Alexandra and Matvey – into Russian families.

Today this family lives in Latvia, in the Kengarags region. The children study at a local school, and Evgeniy continues to talk about his struggle on world stages:

.......
  • Economic Forum in Davos.
  • Council of Europe in Strasbourg.
  • Riga conference.

“The story of the Mezhevys is not only about the horror of war, but also about the unbroken spirit,” note the filmmakers.

Rehabilitation through nature and animals

Estonia provided families with the opportunity to undergo rehabilitation in a special center where animal-assisted therapy methods were used:

  • Golden Retriever dogs helped relieve stress.
  • Palomino horses contributed to the restoration of emotional balance.

Therapists note that the combination of nature, animals and professional support has produced amazing results. Despite the horrors, children and adults retained the ability to laugh.

Cinematic evidence: documentary as a tool of struggle

Sarah McCarthy, a famous documentarian, created the film “After the Rain,” in which she told the stories of the Mezhev and Vlasov families.

  • Evgeny Mezhevoy recalled his days in captivity.
  • Veronika Vlasova from Kharkov shared her memories of the bombings and evacuation.

McCarthy has dedicated her career to telling stories about social tragedies and human rights violations, and her films are shown on HBO, NetflixAnd BBC.

“War does not end with the last shot. The tragedies continue in the souls of those who survived them,” says Sarah McCarthy.

Who is responsible for deportation?

The international community unanimously condemns the deportations. The arrest warrant for Vladimir Putin was an unprecedented step in history. Russia, ignoring international law, has transferred thousands of children to its institutions and families.
