As previously reported, Rabbi Moshe Azman and his wife adopted the boy in 2002. He was then 11 years old and his name was Anton Samborsky. According to his father, Samborsky was drafted into the army a week after his daughter was born in May; after a quick training course for young soldiers, he was immediately sent to the front lines.

The last time the rabbi spoke to his son was on July 17, and on July 24, 2024, after one of the battles, a message came that he was missing in action; it was later confirmed that he had died.
