On December 19, 2024, German representatives in Damascus met with the leader of the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) named Ahmed al-Sharaa. He was previously known by the pseudonym Abu Mohammed al-Julani, but now prefers to use his real name.

The leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham stressed that his forces are not seeking new conflicts, including clashes with Israel, despite a wave of Israeli attacks since the fall of the Assad regime. He denounced Israel's proposed reasons for the airstrikes as “weak” and stressed the need to focus on rebuilding the country.

Israel's new military campaign in Syria, aimed at destroying the remnants of Assad's forces and structures, has become a challenge for Ahmed al-Sharaa, who faces the task of rebuilding a country destroyed by years of civil war.

Ahmed Al-Sharaa stressed that the current focus must be on meeting people's basic needs and working to create a stable and equitable future. This was reported by DW with reference to the dpa agency.
