The European Commissioner for Crisis Management expressed doubts about the leadership qualities of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. In an interview with Politico, Adja Lyabib emphasized the need to continue pressure on Israel, noting that “the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza is far from over.”
Lyabib believes that “extremists on both sides” represent “the main threat to peace.” She mentioned the brutal crime committed by Hamas on October 7, 2023, which resulted in the death of 1,200 people. On the Israeli side, in her opinion, there are also those who are not ready to discuss a two-state solution.
Future Questions
When asked about the need for a change in Israeli leadership, Lyabib replied that it is an important step for “achieving peace.” She emphasized that first, a ceasefire must be achieved, then humanitarian aid must be ensured, and only then can the future be discussed.
The Role of the International Community
Lyabib also touched on the topic of possible genocide in Gaza, noting that this is a matter for the court. She referred to an independent UN investigation that revealed signs of genocide and stressed the importance of restoring humanity.
The European Union faced criticism for suspending sanctions against Israel, which coincided with Donald Trump’s peace initiatives. This decision caused a mixed reaction amid the fragile truce between Israel and Hamas.
