Egypt and Hamas have reached an agreement to exclude Israel from the Philadelphi Corridor, a sticking point in the swap talks. Israel and Hamas insist on controlling the axis from across the Egyptian border, through which Hamas receives material support for its conflict with Israel. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has presented the latest proposal for a swap and a ceasefire in Egypt, but the proposal does not include an Israeli withdrawal.
A Qatari newspaper reported on the agreement between Cairo and Hamas on the Philadelphia Corridor, noting that the US is not pressuring Israel enough to conclude the agreed agreement. The remaining three points of the agreement have not been resolved. Blinken said that the parties have accepted 15 of the 18 points of the agreement, but continue to argue.
Blinken discussed prospects for managing the Gaza Strip after the conflict with Egyptian leaders, arguing that Western oversight, the presence of the Palestinian Authority and technological solutions should be enough to manage the Philadelphi Corridor. The trip to the Middle East without visiting Israel was explained by the visit’s focus on dialogue between the US and Egypt.
