Iran has detained about twenty people after the assassination of the head of the political bureau of the Palestinian terrorist organization Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, in Tehran, The New York Times reported, citing two anonymous sources from Iranian government circles. Among those detained are intelligence officers, military officials and employees of the military boarding house in Tehran where the Hamas leader was killed. The harsh reaction to this incident indicates a serious failure in the security of the Iranian leadership.

According to Ali Vaez, director of the International Crisis Group on Iran, the fact that Iran has failed to protect itself or its allies could have negative consequences for the Iranian regime and push its enemies to radical actions. The Telegraph reported that Haniyeh was killed by an explosive device planted by Iranian intelligence services recruited by Israel. After the incident, the operatives fled abroad.
