Despite the new Russian assault on the Ukrainian capital during the celebration of Rosh Hashanah, hundreds of people gathered to celebrate the New Year according to the Jewish calendar at the Kyiv Jewish Community Center, including diplomats, deputies, and local officials.

On the first evening of Rosh Hashanah, under the leadership of the Chief Rabbi of Kyiv, Rabbi Yonatan Markovich, a central festive dinner took place.

Among the guests were ambassadors from various countries, including representatives from Spain, Poland, Austria, Israel, Azerbaijan, the Czech Republic, Latvia, France, England, and the US consul. They were joined by Ukrainian parliamentarians, the head of military intelligence, and representatives of the president, who was in New York at the time to participate in the UN General Assembly.

One of the most touching moments of the prayer was the prayer of one of the congregants, whose brother died in the conflict just a few months ago. He prayed with great sincerity for the safety of Ukraine’s rescue forces and the civilian population.

Throughout Rosh Hashanah, large community meals, Torah classes, and festive prayers were held at the Central Center. Representatives of Jewish and international organizations, businessmen, and local authorities participated in the events.

“This year we were able to hold a truly unique celebration,” noted Rabbi Markovich.

“The Jewish community came together on Rosh Hashanah to pray for a bright future for Ukraine and Jews around the world. In the conditions of war, it is especially significant when the community radiates strength and faith, welcoming the new year, which, with the help of the Almighty, should bring peace and tranquility.”
