«there will no longer be 50 or 40 million citizens in Ukraine – unless there is intensive immigration“, but these will no longer be Ukrainians and, most likely, not even Europeans”

Ukraine and Israel are in the spotlight in the 2024 global mortality and fertility estimates released by Central Intelligence Agency USA (CIA).

Ukraine ranks first among 229 countries in mortality rateindicating serious demographic problems, exacerbated by the ongoing war. At the same time, Israel (189th place)despite the difficult geopolitical situation, showed much lower mortality rates. However, when looking at the data in detail for Israel, as well as for Judea, Samaria and the Gaza Strip, the picture becomes more mixed. These data demonstrate global demographic imbalances and the need for measures to stabilize the situation in these countries.

In the United States, this figure is 8.5 deaths per thousand people (72nd place). Among Israel's neighbors: Lebanon – 5.6 (176th place), Egypt – 4.3 (212th place), Syria – 4.0 (214th place), Jordan – 3.5 (222nd place).

Mortality rate compares the average annual number of deaths during a year per 1,000 population at mid-year; also known as the crude death rate.

Ukraine tops the mortality rate with 18.6 deaths per thousand people. This is significantly higher than the rates of other countries, such as Lithuania (15.2), Serbia (14.9), Latvia (14.7) and Romania (14.6), which also made it into the top five. Russia took tenth place in the rating with a mortality rate of 14 per thousand, and Belarus – 13.3. It is noteworthy that the top ten included mainly post-Soviet and Eastern European countries.

Israel ranked 189th with a death rate of 5.2 per thousand people. In this regard, it surpasses Judea and Samaria (223rd place with 3.3 per thousand) and the Gaza Strip (225th place with 2.9 deaths per thousand people). In comparison, countries with the lowest death rates include Qatar (1.4), the UAE (1.7), Kuwait (2.3) and Bahrain (2.8).

In addition, the authors of the CIA rating did not divide Israel into a state and Palestine, but provided separate data on Israel, the Gaza Strip, and Judea and Samaria. Statistics show that the Gaza Strip has the most favorable indicators in terms of mortality among these territories – only 2.9 deaths per thousand people, which is close to the indicators of the Persian Gulf countries such as Bahrain and Qatar.

Ukraine has one of the lowest birth rates in the world, ranking 228th out of 229 countries. According to the CIA, the country has only six children born per 1,000 people. This indicates a serious demographic problem, exacerbated by war and economic difficulties. In the past, the birth rate in Ukraine was much higher. For example, from 2010 to 2013, about 500 thousand children were born per year, but since then this figure has fallen by more than half.

By comparison, Niger, which tops the birth rate charts, has 46.6 children born per 1,000 people.

In the context of a full-scale war, the birth rate in Ukraine has fallen sharply, deepening the demographic crisis that has been growing worse over the past 10 years. According to experts, the war itself and the mobilization associated with it play only an indirect role here.

In 2010-2013, about 500 thousand children were born annually. However, in recent years this figure has fallen more than twofold.

Director of the Institute of Demography and Social Research of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Ella Libanova statedWhat “there will no longer be 50 or 40 million citizens in Ukraine – unless there is intensive immigration“, but these will no longer be Ukrainians and, most likely, not even Europeans.

Israel has a higher birth rate in the world rankings than Ukraine. According to the CIA, the birth rate in Israel is approximately 20.5 children per 1,000 people, which is significantly higher than the average for many countries. Unlike Ukraine, where the birth rate has significantly decreased due to economic and military difficulties, Israel maintains a stable birth rate, which is due to both tradition and active support for family policy.
