On Saturday, November 8, 2025, a warm and bright event will take place in the heart of Tel Aviv, bringing together Ukrainians living in Israel and everyone who loves words, literature, and autumn conversations about books.
Ukrainian Book Day will be held from 12:00 to 15:00 at the Ukrainian Cultural Center at Yermiyahu St., 22, organized by Ukrainian Gatherings in Israel

This Ukrainian Book Day in Tel Aviv is timed to celebrate the Day of Ukrainian Literature and Language (October 27) — a date dedicated to the beauty, history, and living power of the Ukrainian word.

Ukrainian Book Day

Guests will find cozy tables, cups of freshly brewed coffee, children’s laughter, and the rustle of pages. On the shelves — books by Ukrainian authors, from children’s illustrations to new novels and poetry collections, and nearby — the authors themselves, ready to sign their books and chat with readers.

The organizers envisioned this day as a true book festival — without formalities, with the aroma of coffee and a sense of belonging to the language in which the soul lives. There will be mini-workshops for children, where little ones can try their hand at creating illustrations or make their own bookmark as a gift. For adults — an autumn book sale, where you can purchase Ukrainian editions rarely found in Israeli stores.

Coffee and tea, sweets, short meetings, and long conversations — all this will create the atmosphere of a home celebration. Admission is free, but space is limited, so organizers ask to register in advance.

Who is behind the event

The initiator of the celebration is the community “Ukrainian Gatherings in Israel”, which has been creating a space for communication among Ukrainians in Israel for several years. Their meetings take place in different cities of the country, gathering people around language, traditions, literature, cinema, and simple human warmth.

In partnership with the Ukrainian Cultural Center in Tel Aviv — a place where lectures, film screenings, workshops, and evenings of Ukrainian music are held — the organizers decided to combine the format of informal communication and intellectual leisure.

For many Ukrainians who moved to Israel after 2014 or with the start of the full-scale war, such events have become not just cultural leisure but a way to remain themselves. Here you can hear your native language, introduce children to Ukrainian books, exchange stories, and feel that you are not alone.

“Gatherings” is a warm, almost homely word, meaning a meeting of old friends. It is in this spirit that the Ukrainian Book Day will be held — without officialdom, without a stage, but with the living breath of true culture.

What is the Day of Ukrainian Literature and Language

This holiday is celebrated annually and is dedicated to the Ukrainian word, its beauty, and strength. It was established on November 6, 1997, by a decree of the President of Ukraine, to remind of the importance of the native language in the life of the people.

For a long time, the holiday was celebrated on November 9, on the day of remembrance of Nestor the Chronicler — a monk, author of “The Tale of Bygone Years,” who is considered the spiritual father of the written tradition in Rus. In 2023, the date was changed to October 27 to synchronize with the church calendar and emphasize the Ukrainian context of the holiday.

The main idea of the holiday is to remind that language is not just a means of communication, but the DNA of a nation, a cultural code that unites Ukrainians around the world.
It symbolizes respect for roots, internal independence, and the ability of the people to preserve themselves even in exile or war.

In Ukraine, on this day, traditionally:

  • national unity radio dictation, in which thousands of people participate;

  • awarding of prizes to promoters of the Ukrainian word;

  • book festivals and readings;

  • as well as actions in support of the Ukrainian language in media, education, and art.

Today, this day is celebrated not only in Ukraine but also abroad. Ukrainians in the diaspora hold literary evenings, read poetry, organize national unity dictations, and create cultural initiatives similar to the one that will take place in Tel Aviv.

It is symbolic that it is in autumn, when the air is filled with the smell of coffee and leaves, that Ukrainians in Israel gather around the word again. After all, language is not just a means of communication, but a way to be together, understand each other, and preserve roots, wherever you live.

From the editorial team of NAnovosti

The editorial team of NAnovosti recommends visiting the Ukrainian Book Day in Tel Aviv to everyone interested in the culture, history, and life of the Ukrainian community in Israel. This is not just an event — it is a live meeting of people who carry with them the memory of their native word and the desire to share it.

For parents, it is an opportunity to show children that the Ukrainian book exists in Israel. For writers and readers — a chance to talk, exchange experiences, and inspiration. For everyone else — a reason to remember how much warmth the pages of a book written in the language we call native carry.

Such events shape the cultural face of the diaspora, create points of support and meaning, especially far from home.
In a world where it is so easy to get lost among languages, it is worth gathering at least once a year, opening a book, and saying: “We are.”

Come. It will be warm, fragrant, and very homely — with coffee, smiles, and words that connect.
