Borrell to suspend negotiations between EU and Israel

In the final week of his mandate as EU foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell plans to propose to EU foreign ministers to delay the entry into force of the article on political dialogue between the European Union and Israel. The information was disseminated by the Israel Hayom portal. Borrell's proposal will be presented at a meeting of foreign ministers of the 27 EU countries scheduled for next Monday in Brussels.

Diplomatic circles in Brussels have received information about alleged human rights violations by the Israeli army, which contradict existing agreements between the EU and Israel. Because of this, the state of affairs makes it impossible to continue the dialogue. It is expected that Borrell's initiative may face resistance from some Eastern European countries, including the Czech Republic, Hungary and Estonia.

Newly nominated Estonian representative Kaja Kalas, who will replace Borrell starting in December, tends to take more moderate views on relations with Israel, unlike the Spanish politician. Earlier, Josep Borrell harshly condemned the statement by the Israeli Finance Minister about his intention to expand sovereignty to settlements in Judea and Samaria, emphasizing that such steps threaten efforts to resolve the conflict.
