US Secretary of State Antony Blinken discussed the situation in Ukraine and the Gaza Strip with British Foreign Secretary David Lemmy by telephone, US State Department Deputy Spokesman Vedant Patel reported. Blinken stressed the importance of reaching an agreement on a ceasefire and the release of hostages in Gaza, as well as the need to increase humanitarian aid and return hostages to their homeland.
The ministers also discussed the need to reduce tensions in the region and reaffirmed their support for Ukraine. Blinken is currently on a tour of the Middle East. He recently visited Israel, where Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accepted a US “interim offer” aimed at narrowing differences after talks failed last week.
Blinken arrived in Egypt on Tuesday to advance talks on a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages. Media reports say US President Joe Biden is seeking to reach an agreement on a ceasefire and the release of hostages by the end of this week.
