Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said the United States would not tolerate attacks on its troops in the Middle East after a rocket attack in Iraq injured seven American troops. The attack on the Ain al-Asad base was the third targeting American troops in three weeks.
“Make no mistake, the United States will not tolerate attacks on our personnel in the region,” the minister stressed.
Five service members and two contractors were wounded, but all were in stable condition, the Pentagon said. A statement about the call with its Israeli counterpart noted the dangerous escalation of events.
The Pentagon is convinced that the attack was carried out by militias backed by Iran. Reports that Iran is preparing to attack Israel are raising concerns, and a visit by US officials to Iran asking them “not to play Netanyahu's game” is evidence of the escalating situation.
