“The Invasion” by Ukrainian director Sergei Loznitsa – a documentary epic about two years of full-scale war received MKR Prize 41st Jerusalem Film Festival. This was reported on July 26, 2024 by Film festival website.
The MKR Prize is an award presented by the Jerusalem Film Festival. It is presented as part of the “In the Spirit of Freedom” competition, which is dedicated to films that reflect themes of freedom and human rights. The MKR Prize is awarded for the best documentary film that presents important and current social and political issues.
This hopeful film is about life, not death.
The documentary film “Invasion” is dedicated to life in Ukraine during a full-scale war with Russia. The film can be called part of a dilogy – Loznitsa's previous documentary “Maidan” was presented in Cannes in 2014. At the Cannes Festival this year, the documentary film “Invasion” was also presented. For the new work, Sergei Loznitsa's film crews traveled around Ukraine for two years.
“Invasion” consists of 30 short stories about the lives of ordinary Ukrainians. The opening scene of the film is a funeral service in a church and a funeral procession on the Maidan in Kyiv. The remaining short stories reveal other moments in the lives of ordinary Ukrainian citizens during the war: the wedding of a soldier in an army uniform, a lesson for schoolchildren held right in a bomb shelter, a mother with a newborn child in a maternity hospital, soldiers with amputated limbs learning to walk again in a rehabilitation center.
