Thor Wennesland, the top UN envoy for the Middle East peace process, has announced his resignation.
He said world leaders were wrongly focusing on short-term solutions, such as humanitarian programs in Gaza, and not paying enough attention to the more ambitious goals of “creating a Palestinian state.”
Before the war began, the international community focused on improving the economic situation in Gaza, hoping that this could prevent new conflicts between Hamas and Israel.
Wennesland also noted that diplomatic agreements between Israel and other Arab countries have not led to peace with the Palestinians.
“The policy has failed. Diplomacy has failed. The international community has failed. And the parties were defeated,” Wennesland emphasized. The split between Hamas and Fatah in the West Bank has become an obstacle to a Palestinian united front.
