According to Egyptian sources, negotiations on an agreement in the Gaza Strip are experiencing serious difficulties, which reduces the chances of significant progress. Difficulties arise against the backdrop of the upcoming visit of the US National Security Adviser, the main obstacles being related to the uncertainty of key issues.
A senior Egyptian official noted that one reason for the delays was Israel's stance towards some Palestinian prisoners, including Marwan Barghouti. Another controversial issue concerns the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip and their possible redeployment. It is hoped that active US intervention will help remove obstacles.
Israel has offered to send some of the released Palestinian prisoners outside the Palestinian territories. This option could be considered as a compromise to advance negotiations. For now, the prospect of a final agreement remains uncertain and much will depend on the actions of key mediators and US efforts.
