The first signals came immediately after the closed meeting in Geneva: the 28-point plan that Donald Trump proposed to Ukraine as “inevitable” suddenly slimmed down to 19 points.
The parties did not explain why nine proposals disappeared, but from the reaction of Kyiv, the EU, and the American delegation, it is already clear — some of the demands simply did not withstand the clash with reality.
The main question looms over the situation: what exactly changed — the content or the balance of influence?
The Ukrainian position was as direct as possible. Kyiv did not agree with any points implying the actual occupation of the remaining free part of the Donetsk region and rejected the idea of “soft security guarantees” in the form of a vague promise of EU membership “someday, if needed”.
And yes — the pressure from Trump, which Zelensky spoke about, was indeed powerful. The American leader assured that by November 27, Ukraine “has no options” for refusal.
But soon it was the White House that stated: deadlines are not dogma. The plan can be postponed, changed, supplemented.
After this, in Geneva, an advisor to the Office of the President of Ukraine confirmed: the 28-point version no longer exists.
From Washington — a pause. From Kyiv — cautious optimism. But from Brussels came harsh specifics.
Ursula von der Leyen spoke without diplomatic embellishments.
Borders are not revised by force. Restrictions on the Ukrainian army are unacceptable because they create a gap for future aggression. Any document claiming to be called peaceful must fix the central role of the EU in ensuring Ukraine’s security.
This time, Europe is not going to be an “observer”.
And then — the reaction from Moscow.
Yuri Ushakov stated that the EU’s proposals do not “suit” the Kremlin, but some American theses can be considered. Which ones — he did not specify. Moscow traditionally pushes the US towards “direct contact”, hinting that time is on its side. But there are no final agreements.
Negotiations continue, and everything hangs in the air. Some points disappear, others change wording, and others are not yet publicly available.
However, one thing is clear: the fate of the plan now depends not on what Trump called “predetermined”, but on the tough trilateral game — Ukraine, the EU, and the USA.
Each new meeting will change the map. Sometimes — imperceptibly. Sometimes — sharply.
But the final document, if it appears at all, will definitely not resemble the original ultimatum.
And therefore, it is important to pay attention to the details, especially in the context that the peaceful dialogue is now being formed not in behind-the-scenes forms, but with the participation of those who are truly responsible for the security of the region.
