Memory that Hurts Through Generations

On the night of November 9 to 10, 1938, a wave of terror swept across Germany.
Hundreds of synagogues were burned, thousands of Jewish shops and homes were destroyed, innocent people were killed just because they were Jews.

This night went down in history as Kristallnacht (The Night of Broken Glass) — a symbol of the beginning of the Holocaust and the legalization of hatred.
The Chief Rabbi of Ukraine Moshe Asman reminded on November 11, 2025:

.......

“Yesterday we remembered one of the most terrible nights in the history of the Jewish people — Kristallnacht. This is the night when the Holocaust began, when Hitler’s Nazis carried out the first attack on Jews, legalizing hatred and violence against them.”

“On the night of November 9 to 10, 1938, hundreds of synagogues were burned, thousands of Jewish shops and homes were ransacked, innocent people were killed — just because they were Jews.”

“86 years have passed, but humanity is once again facing terrible evil”

Asman drew a direct parallel between those events and the present:

“86 years have passed, but humanity is once again facing terrible evil. Today it is Russia, Iran, North Korea, and their satellites, as well as all those who justify terrorists, who blame the victim, who silently watch as cities are destroyed, as children are stolen, as people are killed!”

According to him, evil manifests again under different flags — in aggression, hatred, in the indifference of those who prefer not to notice the suffering of others.

“Ukrainians, like Jews, know what it means to lose a home”

The Chief Rabbi emphasized the spiritual kinship of the two peoples, united by the experience of pain and resilience:

“Ukrainians, like Jews, know what it means to lose a home, to hide children from rockets, and to ask God for the protection of loved ones. Both our peoples experience pain and understand each other well. Just as Jews were once wanted to be destroyed for being Jews, so now Russia kills Ukrainians for being Ukrainians.”

These words resonated as a response to the shared experience of two nations, which today once again find themselves at the forefront of the struggle between light and darkness.

“Our duty is not to let history repeat itself”

Concluding his address, Moshe Asman said:

And that is why our duty is not to let history repeat itself! May the Almighty bless Ukraine and Israel, and all who stand guard over light against darkness!

His words served as a reminder that the lessons of the Holocaust remain alive — and of the necessity to resist evil wherever it may arise.
