Scientists have revealed what the true appearance of Jesus Christ was, including his nationality, eye and hair color, as well as his style of clothing.
Historical Appearance of Jesus
Jesus Christ, often depicted with chestnut hair and a thick beard, likely looked different in reality. Historians, writes www.unian.net, claim that he was ethnically Jewish, with black curly hair and a beard. Debates about the length of his hair continue, but some experts believe he wore a short haircut.
In the Roman era, clean-shaven faces were the norm, but Jesus likely had a beard, as seen on Roman coins of that time. Professor Joan Taylor from King’s College London notes that long hair and a beard could signify a vow, but Jesus, accused of excessive wine consumption, likely did not follow such a vow.
In early images found in Dura-Europos, Jesus is depicted clean-shaven, which, according to Taylor, reflects the fashion of that time. By the 4th century, his appearance changed, and he became associated with philosophers and gods like Zeus.
Eye and Skin Color
The Bible does not provide a detailed description of Jesus’ appearance, but experts suggest he had brown eyes and olive skin. Dr. Meredith Warren from the University of Sheffield believes Jesus looked like an ordinary person of his time, without striking features.
Portraits of 1st-century Egyptian mummies, created in the same region where Jesus lived, show men with dark eyes and short curly hair. In 2015, Richard Neave reconstructed the face of a Jewish man, providing insight into Jesus’ possible features.
Clothing and Physical Form
Jesus was likely lean rather than muscular, considering his lifestyle as a carpenter and traveler. His height is estimated at 170 cm. Jesus’ clothing probably consisted of a short woolen tunic and a himation, rather than the long white garments often depicted.
Jesus’ sandals were simple, made of leather. Archaeological findings confirm that bright clothing was worn at that time, but Jesus likely preferred more subdued shades.
Jesus’ appearance, like his message, was simple and modest, reflecting his life principles and mission.
