Maxim Kharkin, a repatriate from Ukraine, was released from Hamas captivity. This time his mother, Natalia Kharkina, spoke about the support received from Russian President Putin, which was “key to his rescue.”
The Story of Maxim Kharkin
A native of Donbass was kidnapped on October 7, 2023, during the “Nova” festival. For two years, many, including the Russian authorities, were involved in his fate. During his captivity, Maxim was in extremely difficult conditions, and his return became possible thanks to a complex diplomatic game. Russia actively urged Hamas to release the hostage, which was a new wave in relations between Russia and the source of the conflict.
Mother’s Statement
Natalia Kharkina stated that Maxim was able to survive thanks to the efforts made for his release.
“He returned thanks to the President of Russia. I am very proud that I have the opportunity to come to him and personally thank him,” says the mother.
The Role of Russia in the Hostage Release
From the very beginning of the conflict, Russia supported appeals to Hamas with requests for Maxim’s release. According to Russian authorities, they “repeatedly emphasized the importance of his return, as well as made statements that Russian citizenship could contribute to the successful resolution of the situation. The family’s request for his release also did not go unnoticed.”
Atmosphere of Pressure
For two years, Hamas showed cynicism, sometimes agreeing to the possibility of release, but this happened only under external pressure. Maxim’s release was achieved through the efforts of the United States and their intermediaries, which demonstrated the complexity of the situation in the region.
Family Plans After Release
The family has clear intentions to come to Moscow to “express gratitude for Maxim’s release.”
