Former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair seeks to actively participate in the creation of a Palestinian state, particularly in the role of head of a temporary international administration for the Gaza Strip. The financial newspaper Financial Times reports on Blair’s intentions, based on the opinions of informed sources.
At the moment, the idea has not yet received a wide response, but the Trump administration may be interested in this proposal. It is reported that Trump’s team is preparing a peace plan to ease the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Blair discussed his plans with the US President, including the creation of a Palestinian committee that will oversee the restoration of the Gaza Strip under international guardianship.
According to an informed source, Blair aims to take a place on the supervisory board, and according to other information, he was offered the position of chairman of the “International Transitional Authority of Gaza.”
Blair’s office declined to comment upon request from press officials.
The Financial Times emphasizes that after his premiership, Blair held the position of special envoy for Middle East issues for a long time and has recently been actively promoting the idea of international control over the Gaza Strip after the current Israeli military actions against Hamas conclude.
Countries’ Positions on International Guardianship
At the same time, both European and Arab states express dissatisfaction with the idea of international control over Gaza, viewing it as a way to marginalize the Palestinian people.
They argue that the administration of the sector should be given to a Palestinian committee of technocrats, obtaining consent from the Palestinian Authority, which managed the Palestinian territories in the West Bank and enjoys Western support.
