The national broadcaster of Ireland, RTÉ, has for the first time in ten years questioned the country’s participation in the Eurovision Song Contest. If the organizers allow Israel, the company has officially stated that it will not participate in the 70th anniversary contest, which will be held in Vienna.

Political Context

RTÉ stated that the possible boycott is due to dissatisfaction with Israel’s policies. “Our position is absolutely clear: Ireland will not participate in Eurovision 2026 if Israel is there,” said RTÉ Director General Kevin Bakhurst.

Bakhurst also drew attention to the tragic events in Gaza, including targeted attacks on journalists and the lack of international observers in the conflict zone, which exacerbates the hostage situation.

Ireland has long taken a strong stance among Western countries regarding Israel. Previously, RTÉ, together with broadcasters from Spain and Slovenia, appealed to the EBU to discuss these issues.

Possible Consequences of the Boycott

If the boycott takes place, it could negatively affect Eurovision’s reputation. Ireland is one of the record holders with seven victories in the contest, and the absence of its representatives could undermine established traditions.

According to unofficial sources, at least five other countries intend to make similar statements. A mass protest could also threaten the format of the contest’s semifinals.

Discussions at the EBU Level

In July, at the EBU General Assembly, some participants expressed concern about Israel’s admission to future contests. The union proposed holding additional consultations and allowed countries to withdraw from participation without penalties until December of the current year.

The final decision will be announced after the official response from the European Broadcasting Union.

Eurovision 2026 is scheduled in Vienna following the triumph of singer Jay Jay with his hit Wasted Love.

It is also reported that Ukraine has officially confirmed its participation in the 70th Eurovision, which is expected to be an important musical event next year.
