On September 3, 2025, during a meeting with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer in London, Pedro Sanchez, the Prime Minister of Spain, expressed serious concern about the “double standards of the West regarding the war in Ukraine and the conflict in Gaza.”
He described the global reaction to Israel’s change as one of the darkest moments in the history of modern international relations.
In an interview with The Guardian, Sanchez also pointed to the US, under Donald Trump’s administration, once again undermining the international order established after World War II and based on rules.
At the same time, the Spanish leader noted that a number of European countries are beginning to follow Spain’s example in recognizing the State of Palestine. However, he did not fail to emphasize that Europe’s reaction to current events was extremely insufficient:
“This is a complete failure. It is important to note that there are states within the EU with different positions regarding influence on Israel. And such disagreements are absolutely unacceptable if we aim to strengthen our authority in other crisis situations, such as in Ukraine,” he added.
Sanchez also noted that although the roots of these conflicts differ, the world looks at the European Union and asks:
“Why do you apply double standards regarding Ukraine and Gaza?”
Additionally, it is worth noting that more than a hundred former Members of the European Parliament have called on the EU to suspend the Association Agreement with Israel. Their letter raised the issue that the European Union’s failure to take “decisive measures” against Israel for its actions in Gaza could be perceived as “complicity in war crimes.”
