On Thursday, August 28, 2025, in the Sea of Azov, near the annexed Crimea, an operation was conducted in which the joint forces of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine and the special unit “Ghosts” struck the Russian small missile ship of project 21631 “Buyan-M”. This ship, which uses “Kalibr” cruise missiles, became the target for the attack.
The operation began with a drone airstrike on the ship’s radar station, which allowed it to be disabled. Then the “Ghosts” fighters attacked the Russian vessel itself, as reported by the press service of the Ukrainian military intelligence.
As a result of the attack, the ship, which was in the area of potential “Kalibr” launches in the Temryuk Bay, sustained damage and was forced to leave the areas designated for combat duty.
Ships belonging to the “Buyan-M” project are small missile vessels of the near-sea zone. They are equipped with universal launchers 3S14, designed for launching both “Kalibr-NK” and “Oniks”. The Russian fleet includes 12 such ships. The main characteristics of the project 21631 “Buyan-M” suggest a displacement of about 950 tons, a length of 74 meters, and a crew of 52 people. The armament includes eight launchers for “Kalibr-NK” or “Oniks”.
