January 19, 2025 was an important date for Israel: Romi Gonen, Emily Damari and Doron Steinbrecher were released from Hamas captivity, where they spent 471 days. These are the first of 33 hostages to be returned as part of the first phase of the deal.
The IDF press service confirmed their arrival in Israel at 5:56 p.m., and at 6:24 p.m. the liberated men met with their mothers at the reception center at Kibbutz Reim.
How the liberation took place
The process began with the transfer of hostages to representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in the Gaza Strip. At 17:09 it was reported that Romy, Emily and Doron had been handed over to the ICRC.
Footage from the scene showed that they were able to move independently. Already at 17:40, a Red Cross convoy delivered them to IDF representatives. After the first medical examination and meeting with the mothers, those released were taken by helicopter to Sheba Hospital.

Thousands of Israelis gathered in “Hostage Square” in Tel Aviv. There, news about the return of the hostages was broadcast on giant screens. Joy and relief were felt everywhere.
