Israel has begun searching for the burial site of spy Eli Cohen, who was executed in Damascus in 1965. According to the Al-Akhbar newspaper, Israel is interacting with representatives in Syria, hoping to exploit the political crisis after the fall of the Assad regime.

Eli Cohen began his intelligence work in Syria in 1961, collecting valuable data on the military and political situation in the region. His espionage activities were discovered in January 1965 and he was executed. Despite efforts, Cohen's remains have still not been returned to his homeland.

Israel cooperated with Russia in searching for Cohen's remains, but without success. Netanyahu confirmed that Russia was assisting in the search for the spy's remains, including the Al-Yarmouk refugee cemetery in Damascus. In 2021, a rare video was released purportedly showing Eli Cohen in Damascus. Political changes in Syria may help identify the spy's burial site.

Israel is also seeking to find the remains of soldiers who disappeared after the Battle of Sultan Yaqub in 1982 and to recover ancient Torah scrolls and other artifacts from Syria. It is hoped that the current instability in the region will help the Israelis complete this important chapter in their intelligence history.
